  2. Athena was born fully armed from the forehead of Zues. Zues swallowed her mother, Metis, while she was pregnant with Athena.
  3. The Greek city of Athens is named after Athena. Athena and her uncle Posiedon competed for the affections of Greece. They each gave a gift to the nation. Posiedon provided either a wonderful horse or a salt-water spring. Athena provided an olive tree, giving shade, oil, and olives. The Greeks preferred her girft and named the city after her.
  4. Athena never married and never had children, even though she was very fond of Odysseus.
  5. Her symbol is the Owl, signifying wisdom and watchfulness.
  6. Her appearance is of a young woman wearing a helmet and holding a shield.
  7. The Parthenon is her best-known and best preserved temple.
  8. She is rational, intelligent, a powerful defender in war, but also a potent peacemaker.
  9. Another symbol of Athena is her shield. It is an aegis (small shield) showing the snakey head of Medusa.
  10. Odysseus is her favorite and protege. She also often helps his son, Telemachus.
